Clipmarks: Web 2.0 Bookmarking Site

If, like us you wish you could “tear out” sections of a website as you would a magazine or newspaper, then Clipmarks is the thing for you.

This Clipmarks tutorial shows both the ease of use, and the usefulness of this website

Here at Evoke we are always on the lookout for new sites that enrich the internet experience, and anything that can make our lives that little bit easier when researching or browsing the web must be a good thing.

Clipmarks is an ingenious tool that allows you to tag, store, organize and share snippets of web pages. It’s founder is Clipmarks CEO, Eric Goldstein, a lawyer whose annoyance with having to cut-and-paste citations into word files – creating messy and unusable references, led him to create version one of the service.

Clipmarks in its current Web 2.0 form has dusted off its static nature and is well on the way to becoming a popular service amongst familiar social bookmarking sites like Digg, del.icio.us and StumbleUpon.

Clipmarks is a Mozilla/Firefox or Internet Explorer plugin, which installs into your browser as a single icon. When this icon is selected an interactive toolbar appears – clip mode is now activated and you can start to select information including text, imagery and video.Squidoo Clipmark

As you scan the web page with your mouse, Clipmarks highlights individual sections which can then be clipped and saved, e-mailed, printed or posted to your blog in a matter of seconds. Clipmarks link to their original sources for future reference.

This bookmarking technique could prove very useful for anyone researching a topic, from student to professional – but just as useful as a way to mark and share your prize finds. The social aspect of the site allows for the information to be shared, and each ‘clip’ has a set number of text characters which allows for quick reading (you can always find out more at the original source). You can store more information privately for those who need something a little more in-depth.

You can better organise your clips by adding headings, notes and tags which will also make them easier for others to find: keep your information relevant for the best results.

There is an obvious flaw in the concept however, which is that of Copyright infringment. Now, this could be a potential nightmare for the company and at present the responsibility for content usage is that of the user – and the onus is on the content owner to inforce their copyright. Any content online is prone to copyright issues, but we would advise anyone who is going to use Clipmarks to consider how and where you use the service to avoid any problems. As Evoke is all about community we are very excited about exchanging clips with our readers – its a great way to learn and experience things that otherwise may go unnoticed. Evoke get many emails, so Clipmarks makes sense as a way for you to keep us informed of news, events or anything you may want to shout about.

Evoke have been using Clipmarks for a while now and it can be very addictive – the design of the site is incredibly user-friendly and it wont take long before your stockpiling bookmarks.
