D&AD Student Awards 2007

Another year, another exhibition in which graduate design students congregated for the D&AD Global Student Awards.

Scott Evans was awarded D&AD Student of the Year for his video for Thom Yorke’s single ‘The Clock’

Environmental issues were very much at the forefront this year, the top prize going to Scott Evans from the University College for the Creative Arts at Farnham. Tracking the waste generated by creating and viewing Thom Yorke’s excellent solo single ‘The Clock’, Scott highlights an ever increasing necessity to evaluate the way in which the creative process is handled.

The idea is an extremely simple one, the minimalist typography visuals outline the extensive research carried out, and the overall effect conveys a powerful message. It just goes to show that a solid concept does not need to be overworked – the outcome here is far more effective, and affecting when clear and concise.

Within the other advertising ‘motion’ categories there were one or two other interesting concepts in-keeping with the environmental theme, both of which exhibit simple yet carefully orchestrated ideas. One was another example of Thom Yorke’s music video, which is a literal take on our all to regular habit of sweeping waste under the carpet – for shear effort in the amount of rubbish accumulated merits an award. Secondly, the animated stop motion 15 Steps to Climate Cool the potentially beautiful advert for stopping climate change is obviously hindered by budget, but this doesnt hinder its message:

The D&AD Awards, or ‘New Blood’ are seen by many as the cornerstone of the graduate world but judging from some of the awardees (of which there are many), it is unclear as to whether or not the hype is wholly rewarding. There are of course, many deserving graduates whose hard work does not go unnoticed but many in the professional world feel D&AD can be more show then substance.

There is no debating, from a students perspective that it is a great achievement to be credited with the much coveted yellow pencil but the overall standard of work viewed here feels somewhat lacking.
