TED Talks: Hans Rosling

Hans Rosling demonstrates his next generation Trendalyzer software

Hans Roslings fascinating TED Talk demonstrates in an incredibly accessible way how developing countries are pulling themselves out of poverty.

The statistics Hans presents us with use animation software developed by his Gapminder Foundation. The Trendalyzer software (recently acquired by Google) turns complex global trends into lively animations, making decades of data pop.

Trendalyzer is a flash-based programme which works by displaying countries as user-friendly colourful bubbles which can be animated to show the curves of growth, mortality and poverty rates. It allows users to see patterns in statistics which would be difficult to visualise otherwise, and brings the net one step closer to making data accessible online.

Using such methods for accumulating data allows for a better understanding of the subject matter and simple adaptions allow for an efficient system for creating new calculations. Such breakthroughs in flash animations open up new avenues for other fields of data management.

The software is much like the man himself – charasmatic, entertaining and to the point. Make sure you watch this through to the jaw-dropping finale!

“Rosling believes that making information more accessible has the potential to change the quality of the information itself.” – Business Week Online
